James Evans MS in the Welsh Parliament

In the Senedd today, James Evans MS called for funding to be directed towards new sporting facilities in Brecon & Radnorshire.

Earlier this year, the UK Government announced £12.6 million in funding for sporting facilities in Wales, which will be delivered in partnership with the Football Association of Wales (FAW).

Evans has previously called for more sporting investment across Mid Wales, and today identified Rhayader as one of the areas that would benefit from investment.

During First Minister’s Questions, Evans said he wanted to “to bang the drum for more investment in Brecon and Radnorshire “ and that “Rhayader in my constituency is in much need of a facility upgrade, to give them that high-quality pitch that can produce the Wales sports stars of the future”.

In response, First Minister Mark Drakeford criticised the UK Government for the way it chose to fund these facilities and said he was sure that the Rhayader bid “will be taken seriously by the FAW”.

James said:

“It’s clear that Mid Wales has missed out on much-needed cash in Welsh Government funding streams for sporting facilities.

“With this new UK Government funding, we have a great opportunity to bring in more money for facilities to Mid Wales.

“Modernising and upgrading the pitches in Rhayader would be a brilliant way to spend some of that £12.6 million. It would become a true focal point for the community and local clubs.”
