James Evans MS in the Welsh Parliament

In the Senedd today, James Evans MS asked a Topical Question on the allegations of a “toxic culture” at the Welsh Rugby Union. After Evans asked the opening question, other Senedd Members made supplementary contributions.

A BBC Wales investigation recently revealed allegations of misogynistic and sexist behaviour at the WRU, including an allegation from a former female employee who said a male colleague had made a comment about raping her.

Evans said, “It makes me sick to think there are people who would foster this toxic culture within the WRU.” He continued “there should be no hiding place for anyone who carries out this foul behaviour or for those who protect or condone it.”

He called on the Welsh Government to hold the WRU leadership accountable. Deputy Minister for Sport, Dawn Bowden MS, responded by saying “The Welsh Government is not going to be a bystander to abuse, we are committed to tackling harassment and bullying head-on.”

James said:

“I want to applaud those who have come forward to expose these deep-rooted problems within the Welsh Rugby Union. It’s obvious that there needs to be immediate and transparent action taken to tackle this huge problem.

“Women being harassed, bullied and intimidated in the workplace is disgusting and completely unacceptable.

“The WRU leadership needs to be held accountable for the environment that has been created at the heart of the organisation.”
