Active Travel Schemes are not good value for money

James Evans MS has criticised the Welsh Labour Government’s current approach to Active Travel schemes, such as the pavement linking Llandrindod Wells to Howey.

Responding to a report from the independent Active Travel Board, James Evans MS said:

“Active Travel is important for the health of people in Wales but the schemes like we have seen in Llandrindod Wells are ill thought through and badly designed. Pedestrians have cited concerns about the lack of demarcation on the pavement and sharing the same space as bicycles and electric scooters potentially travelling in excess of 30mph, faster than the adjacent road traffic. The narrowing of the road in Llandrindod Wells has made the area more dangerous than before, as vehicles frequently have to mount the pavement to pass at the pinch points.”

“Welsh Labour have allocated a staggering £56million for Active Travel schemes in 2024-25 despite an independent report finding there has been no significant increase in cycling or walking. This is clearly not delivering on its objectives.

“If Welsh Labour were serious about reducing car use, they should invest in better public transport in Mid Wales. If they want residents to be more active, they should be funding our leisure centres and parks.  At a time when our Healthcare and Education need investment, £56 million on Active Travel is not good use of tax-payers money.”
