James Evans MS has hit out at the Welsh Government’s latest air quality consultation, warning it risks unfairly targeting ordinary people across Mid Wales.
The consultation, announced earlier this month by Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies MS, proposes new penalties for car idling and an awareness campaign around domestic burning. James said these measures show the Welsh Labour Government once again interfering in people’s day-to-day lives instead of focusing on delivering better public services.
James Evans MS said:
“People in Mid Wales already have little choice when it comes to heating their homes. For many, wood burners are not a lifestyle choice – they are a necessity. Yet we now see Welsh Labour moving towards telling us how we can heat our homes, while threatening more fines for residents.“On top of this, they want to slap extra penalties on drivers for idling. This is more government overreach and more red tape when people are already struggling with the cost of living. Instead of dictating how we live our lives, the Government should be fixing our NHS, tackling rural transport cuts and supporting struggling farmers.
“Once again, Welsh Labour are putting the burden on hardworking families while ignoring the real issues people face in Mid Wales.”
