James Evans MS has highlighted the threats that rural Wales is facing as a result of renewable energy infrastructure.
Leading a debate in the Senedd yesterday afternoon, James spoke about the harm that would be inflicted on rural livelihoods because of new wind turbine and pylon developments – and how this would negatively impact tourism in rural Wales. Tourism is a key part of the rural economy - supplementing farming incomes and bringing in money that keeps small businesses open.
James raised the issue of communities who feel they have little say in the decision process, with consultation events feeling more of a formality than a chance to listen to their concerns. Current developments proposed in Mid-Wales are deemed ‘Developments of National Significance’, meaning Ministers will be the decision makers rather than the usual planning processes.
Speaking in the Senedd, James Evans MS said:
“The beauty of Wales landscapes attracts thousands of tourists ever year, but the serenity our countryside provides is under threat.
“Although renewable energy is crucial, we cannot afford to ignore the potential harm such projects will have on the very communities they are supposed to help. While wind power offers a clean alternative, setting stricter noise emission limits and ensuring any structures are placed further away from homes are crucial steps.
“Our fight for a sustainable future cannot come at the expense of our rural communities. It has to be done in a way that respects our beautiful countryside.”
