James Evans MS has welcomed the Welsh Government’s new mental health and well-being strategy for 2025–2035, but warned that positive headlines must now be matched with real, measurable improvements in services and accountability.
Speaking in the Senedd, James acknowledged the vision outlined in the plan but said too many people across Wales still struggle to access timely mental health support. He raised concerns about postcode lotteries created by pilot schemes, the unclear rollout of same-day open-access services, and whether rural areas will be treated equally. He also questioned the shift towards a social care-led model without clear investment or workforce planning.
James also called for better accountability, including annual reporting and published targets, and urged Ministers to commit just £450,000 to ensure peer mentors for veterans are made available in every health board across Wales.
James Evans MS said:
“I want to see mental health services in Wales become the best in Europe, but that won’t happen through good intentions alone. This strategy must move beyond broad ambitions and start delivering real results on the ground.
“People shouldn’t have to wait for support because of their postcode. Shifting responsibilities to underfunded local services without the right investment just won’t work, and we must see clarity around workforce planning, timelines, and proper scrutiny of progress.
“I’ll keep working constructively to make sure this strategy succeeds, but success will only come if there’s a clear plan, clear accountability, and the political will to deliver.”
