At a meeting of the Liberal Democrat/Labour Cabinet yesterday (Tuesday, 19 August), senior councillors received a report on the draft policy for managing the farm estate, which recommends they proceed with a 28-day consultation.
James Evans MS, Senedd Member for Brecon and Radnorshire, said:
“A 28-day consultation is a start, but for such a pivotal policy affecting livelihoods, land, and local food production, proper engagement is essential. We need clarity on what the draft policy proposes and how changes will impact tenants, local businesses, and rural communities.
“I urge Powys County Council to go further than ticking the consultation box. They must actively reach out to affected farmers, ensure that responses are meaningful, and be willing to amend the policy in light of real concerns. Farming in Brecon & Radnorshire deserves better than formulaic engagement, we need meaningful collaboration.”
“Our county farms offer a fantastic opportunity for young people looking to get into the agricultural industry, and they must be protected for future generations. Farming is the backbone of rural Powys and decisions on the Farm Estate must be shaped by the communities and farmers who rely on it.”
