School Holiday Reform Shelved

After pressure from the Royal Welsh Show, YFC, and many people across Brecon and Radnorshire, the Welsh Government has shelved their plans to cut the school summer holiday which will come as a relief to many across rural Wales.

In a statement to the Senedd later today, Cabinet Secretary Lynne Neagle MS will admit that opinion was hugely divided on the issue, including the Teaching Unions.

James Evans MS has consistently raised concerns that changing the structure of the school term would negatively impact our tourism industry and have an effect on children being able to participate in the Royal Welsh Show at the end of July.

James Evans MS said:

“I am encouraged by the recent Welsh Government announcement that their plans to alter the school year have been shelved until at least 2026.

“These changes would have had a massive impact on many areas, including the quality of the teaching and learning of young people, to the devastating impact these changes would have had on the Royal Welsh Show.

“I will keep putting pressure on Welsh Government to keep these proposals off the table, as what they need to focus on is delivering for our children - not tinkering with the school year.”
