Senedd Reform: Brecon and Radnorshire constituency name change risks damaging our heritage

James Evans MS is extremely worried about the latest Senedd reform plans that would see Brecon and Radnorshire renamed at the next election.

The Democracy and Boundary Commission Cymru has recently announced that from the next election in 2026, the new constituencies will be predominately referred to by their Welsh-language only names. Plans for a Brecon, Radnor, Neath and Swansea East constituency has now been revised to ‘South Powys Tawe Neath’, or ‘De Powys Tawe Nedd’. James is becoming increasingly concerned that this change risks damaging our heritage and what makes our place in Wales unique.

A consultation on the revised changes has opened for public responses and closes on Monday 13th January 2025 - this can be completed here. The revised proposals can be read in detail here.

James Evans MS, Senedd Member for Brecon and Radnorshire, said:

“I am extremely annoyed to see the latest Senedd reform proposals that would see Brecon and Radnorshire wiped off the map in favour of ‘South Powys Tawe Neath’. This name change risks damaging our heritage, tearing our communities apart.

“As many of you will know, I have been very vocal in my opposition on plans to reform the Senedd ever since they were announced by the Welsh Labour Government, aided and abetted by Plaid Cymru and the Lib Dems. It’s quite telling that they can find £120m for more 36 more politicians – yet cannot find the money to reinstate a Winter Fuel Allowance to keep Welsh pensioners warm this Winter. Senedd reform is waste of public money, money that should be used to fix our broken public services.  Labour, Plaid Cymru, Liberal Democrats and Reform are all welcoming the expansion of the Senedd. It is only the Welsh Conservatives that have been consistently opposed to Senedd expansion.

“I am encouraging everyone to take part in the consultation on this latest proposed change and make your thoughts well and truly clear on how damaging these plans are.”
