James Evans MS has questioned the Welsh Government on what plans they have in place to help young people who are suffering from body dysmorphia.

In an exchange with the Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing Sarah Murphy MS, James highlighted the large number of young people suffering from the condition, saying social media is a contributory factor in young people seeking cosmetic procedures in attempts to alter their existing features.

James sought clarity on what strategies are being put in place to help those in need and what support is being offered for the third sector who have the resources to offer their help.

Speaking after the exchange, James Evans MS said

“With the rise of social media and the quest to be what’s perceived as ‘perfect’, many of our young people are sadly developing body dysmorphia because of this and are seeking to alter their image to meet that of what they see online.

“The Welsh Labour Government and the UK Labour Government needs to urgently address the issue of digitally altered images.  The mental health pressures on young people today are great and as we mark World Mental Health Day, Welsh Labour must ensure help and support is available right across Wales and that third sector organisations are properly funded.”
