Commenting on the Welsh Government’s decision to vote against motion to annul the NVZ Regulations, Welsh Conservative Russell George MS for Montgomeryshire and James Evans, Conservative Candidate for Brecon & Radnorshire have expressed their disappointment over the betrayal of our farmers.

James Evans, Conservative Senedd Candidate for Brecon and Radnorshire  said:

“Using a sledge-hammer to crack a nut is not the answer for addressing water quality. One pollution incident is one too many, but these regulations are disproportionate. We need to see an evidence-based approach to tackle water pollution that works with our agricultural industry in Brecon and Radnorshire. For the Liberal Democrat member to sit on her hands and not even bother to vote tells you all you need to know about what they think of the agricultural community in Brecon and Radnorshire. In the morning the Lib Dems oppose a whole Wales NVZ’s and by the afternoon they support it. Shame on them, this is a betrayal of our local farmers by Labour and the Lib Dems and a dark day for our communities and it will not be forgot. If I am elected in May, my first act will be to re-table this vote to get this damaging legalisation removed.”

Russell George, Senedd Member for Montgomeryshire said:

“Bitterly disappointed in a Senedd vote today. Welsh Governments plans will force farming businesses across Wales, many here in Montgomeryshire, to spend huge sums of money when it’s not necessary. In doing so, putting at risk livelihoods and jobs, the implications are significant. The farming unions and industry lobbied hard, but despite the efforts of many, sadly neither Labour Ministers or Liberal Democrat Kirsty Williams could be persuaded to support the annulment today. This is so significant for our area; this is an issue which must continue to be challenged. Pleased that a legal challenge against the Welsh Government’s decision is being explored, and clearly, a new Government after May’s elections can also put a stop to these damaging and unnecessary regulations.”
