James Evans MS is concerned about the Welsh Government’s plans to change the school year. One proposal includes shortening the summer break.  This will have a massive impact on our very own Royal Welsh show, and many other shows and events across Wales. The teaching unions are opposing these plans and concerns have been voiced over the impact on school children and staff, saying it will ‘damage’ children’s education.

Under new proposals, the summer holidays could be reduced by up to two weeks – meaning schools would still be open during the Royal Welsh Show which traditionally takes place in the first week of the school summer holidays.

The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, organisers of the annual agricultural show, fear any change could result in a loss of income in excess of £1 million from reduced attendance, lower gate sales, and camping revenue.

James is urging his constituents to have their say in the consultation which is open until 12th February. (Link: https://www.gov.wales/structure-school-year)

James Evans MS said:

“Shortening the school year will have a massive impact on the Royal Welsh show, and its long-term viability. Thousands of children have competed at the Royal Welsh over the years, and I want to see this continue.

“These proposals are a distraction from the real issues that Welsh Government should be tackling – poor education results, lack of funding in our schools, and a recruitment and retention crisis in teaching and non-teaching staff.

“It is really important that everybody responds to the consultation that the Welsh Government are running about the school term time. Make sure you have your say before the closing date on 12th February.”
