James Evans MS has expressed concerns over proposed changes to shift patterns in the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, warning that they could have a detrimental impact on firefighters and the public they serve.
Speaking in the Senedd, James challenged the Welsh Government on the issue, highlighting that the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has raised significant objections. The proposed changes could negatively impact firefighters with families and caring responsibilities, as well as affect response times and overall service effectiveness. James urged the Welsh Government and MWWFS to engage in meaningful discussions with firefighters and their representatives before implementing any changes.
The proposed changes have already sparked protests, with over 200 firefighters and supporters gathering outside the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service headquarters to appeal to the MWWFS to reconsider its plans. This comes off the recent announcement by MWWFS that they are reviewing their delivery model through their Community Risk Management Plan 2040., and the concerns from local residents and firefighters that this could mean reduced services or response times for rural areas.
James Evans MS said:
"Firefighters are the backbone of our emergency response system, and any changes that put additional pressure on them must be carefully scrutinised.
"The concerns raised by the Fire Brigades Union must not be ignored. We need to ensure that any alterations to shift patterns do not jeopardise their well-being or the vital service they provide to our communities.
"I stand firmly with our firefighters and will continue pressing the Welsh Government to ensure that their concerns are heard and addressed. Public safety and firefighter welfare must come first.”
