The Senedd hosted a poignant event this week to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, paying tribute to the service and sacrifice of all those who fought in the Second World War.

The ceremony, sponsored by Darren Millar MS, brought together Members of the Senedd, representatives from the Royal British Legion, and key veterans' organisations to remember those who served in British, Commonwealth, and Allied forces. James Evans MS opened the event, giving a speech to all those present.

VE Day, 8th May 1945, marked the end of the war in Europe and remains a powerful symbol of hope, unity, and freedom.

Commenting on the event, James Evans MS said:

“VE Day reminds us of the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of those who fought to restore peace and freedom across Europe. We must never forget the cost of that victory.”

“This anniversary is a moment to honour not only the fallen but also the families and communities who carried the burden of war on the home front.”

“It’s vital that future generations understand the legacy of VE Day and the importance of standing up for democracy, unity, and peace in our world today.”
